Abstract

In recent decades research on voter turnout has vastly increased, especially because of the structural trend towards lower turnout in western societies. Some scholars consider the introduction of a system of compulsory voting as an effective tool to counter this trend.

    Sofie Hennau is Assistant Professor of Public Administration at the School of Social Sciencies at Hasselt University. Her research focuses on citizen participation and democratic innovation, with specific attention to the municipal level.

  • Johan Ackaert

    Johan Ackaert is Professor Emeritus at Hasselt University. His research expertise is in electoral participation, local governance and local policy.
